Powerful Prayer

Josh 10:12-13 On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day

James 5:13-16 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

So often we figure, “Well God said no”, when the problem may be us not Him. Either we lack the faith that God will answer, we ask for the wrong thing OR we fall short in meeting the requirements of answered prayer. Joshua prayed and the sun stood still for a full day because he needed the Lord’s help in defeating the enemies of Israel, but most of all he trusted God completely and knew that victory had been promised. Sometimes we convince ourselves that something we are asking for is right when in reality we know we are not seeking the correct thing. Delusions of grandeur cause many to stumble and begin to distrust God but if we seek what He has for us we will see God move miraculously. We must know Him and His Word in order to pray as we should. If we refuse to study His Word or attend church to learn more and if we will not confess and repent our sin we cannot expect God to answer one small prayer let alone our great needs and the dreams we deeply believe in. Remember, Joshua and Caleb were the only men of their generation allowed to enter the Promised Land and that was due to their powerful faith and their knowledge of God. Want answered prayers? Confess your sin, get to know God so you can pray according to His will and then trust Him. And remember sometimes God just says NO, because His Grace is sufficient.

I like the good samaritan story found in Luke 10:25-37

Thats the way I see myself. I am sure Jesus would agree.

It is better to be a good person then a bad Christian.

I am a good person. If I came across any of you on the side of the road in need of help, I would stop and help.

Being a good person is a good thing, but John 14:5-7 Thomas said to him, "Lord, we don't know where you are going, so how can we know the way?" 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him." (NIV)
Being a good person will not get us into heaven only faith in the one who is The Way is the source of assurance of a heavenly home.

  • Jesus also taught about repentance in Luke 13 vs 1-5:
"There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
and Jesus aswering said unto them, suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Or the eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
I tell you, Nay: but except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish."

I gather from this scripture text that there is much more to repentance then we might think, but it is ultimately God's goodness that leads to repentance(Romans 2 vs 4).

AMEN and the sooner the better. For your response will bring rejoicing in heaven. Luke 15:7
7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

  • 1John 3 vs 20-22 says:

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.
And whatsover we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

Right now my heart condemns me, so I don't feel very confident in prayer. The good news is that God is greater than my heart and can change this, so that I can ask and receive of him.
