  • I heard from a good Christian leader the Promise Keepers was cutting way back on their activities. I'll check. In the meantime, I'll change my title.

Not that I am doubting this... just curious where the information came from that PK is no longer? Their website seems to be active and I see this quote on it "We have already begun planning for 2009. One of the most exciting of these plans will be a Special 20th Anniversary Celebration commencing back where it all began twenty years ago — in Boulder, Colorado! This celebration will be a one-of-a-kind conference."....

    ? I'm curious.

  • Interesting topic here. I didn't know Promise Keepers isn't anymore. I know some of the folks from that have now moved on to a new organization called Men at the Cross (www.menatthecross.org).

I personally have not found that I ever fit into a men's group. There has always been that sense that to really belong you had to be a jock or a hunter or something really manly. And I am a man, but those things never appealed to me. I'm a worker. I'm a very strong people person- relationships are extremely important to me, and I have gone to great extremes to find and have restored relationships. I have put many hours of effort into renewing old friendships and work at maintaining them as well as finding new ones.

So I have this aversion to men's groups.

On the other hand, I have come into contact with a group that has no such predisposition. The premise here is that we are all sinners. We all have an addiction- to humanity. Some have become more depraved than others in this addiction, but all have come to realize that going through our Christian life alone is a recipe for disaster. I cannot stand alone. I need my brothers to stand with me. And as they have gone through much the same as I, they understand and will listen to me without judgment or trying to fix me. They will help me go through my dark times.

For me, The Samson Society (www.samsonsociety.org) is a men's group that takes on all issues and all men. Although it was founded by a man that was addicted to pornography, it is not limited to this addiction. In addition, it does not differentiate between addictions, and all are welcome- porn, alcohol, coke, weed, anger, depression, pride....whatever your drug of choice is, all are welcome into this group. It does not offer a fix for your sin, but it does help you face your sin with the strength of brothers, knowing that God does indeed love us WHILE we are sinners- offering a way out.
