When purchasing a new microphone, one of the most important features to take into consideration is the frequency response. The frequency response will tell you what application a microphone is best used for. The range of human hearing is 20Hz to 20 KHz so a microphone that is said to have a frequency response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz can reproduce all frequencies within this range. This may not always be desirable if you are using a mic for a specific function such as a vocal mic or if you plan to mic an instrument. For example; if you are using a microphone such as the Kingdom KT58 for vocals you will want to see more of an emphasis on the mid range frequencies with the low and high end attenuated (reduced)  and for a kick drum you will want more emphasis on the low end to accurately reproduce the natural sound of the drum.
It is also important to know that condenser mics typically have a flatter response meaning all frequencies are represented equally. This makes them more desirable for studio and recording applications when accurate sound is more important. When using a condenser mic for vocals you may want to employ the high pass filter that is found on most mixing boards to attenuate (reduce) the lower frequencies to make the voice sound more natural and not as “boomy”.
