The Four Core Ideals
A Household Devotional

Paul Collier

This is a devotional on the four core ideals which are the bedrock upon which the standards of your household are built.

Before we begin our devotional, I want us to start from the only true place of knowledge, and to emphasize, as you listen to my words, and the Word of God, that all knowledge in the body of Christ comes ONLY from the Word itself.

Proverbs 1:7 The fear of the Lord is the start of knowledge: but the foolish have no use for wisdom and teaching.
So let us begin with the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-7 Put all your hope in God, not looking to your reason for support. In all your ways give ear to him, and he will make straight your footsteps. Put no high value on your wisdom: let the fear of the Lord be before you, and keep yourself from evil.

As the Lord instructs us to daily sing a new song, I would like to begin with a new song about the four core ideals I have received from the Lord. The meaning of this new song will unfold as you listen to my devotional. We will repeat this new song at the end, so that it might tie together the devotional’s core message, to teach the four core ideals and to praise the Lord’s Word in our daily lives.

Lord, let us sing a new song of praise in
Your name.
As new stars spill from the cavity of black,
let our lives be new stars
formed from the black earth,
wholly apart from the earth, but living,
in our diverse
lights, in the universal body of Christ.
Stars reign in their way, with this blue frost
and that yellow spiraling.
They fill the body with that diverse display.
Let no monochrome paint the glory of your
diverse lights with some dull standard that
does not light the lost eye
with your great coloring,
that does not sing love's chromatic glory.
As all pins of light are equal in your glory,
let no light consume another,
let no light lift itself above the other great,
diverse displays of your heavenly awe.
Our song is a song of love in the fire
and diverse engines,
the crimson streaked with gold,
the azure splotched in violet.
with all great stars in service
to the great light of heaven that governs
all in love and service, the light of the Lord that
spills from the star-making machine,
the great Word, which fuels all of the stars
of the universal body of Christ.

Today, I want to explain to you the four core ideals that our household standards are built upon, so that you might see how they come not from the mouths of men, but from the Word, the only true source of knowledge and wisdom.

The four core ideals
Unity in Diversity- U
Popular Sovereignty- P
Democratic Equality- D
Rule of Law- R

Romans Chapter 12 is the most important chapter in the bible to the four core ideals, Unity in Diversity, Popular Sovereignty, Democratic Equality, and Rule of Law. As a matter of fact, Romans Chapter 12 spells out the four core principles in the exact order that the name invokes.

Let us begin with

Unity in Diversity
Romans 12:4 In one body we have many parts. These parts don't all do the same thing.
By necessity, the body of Christ has diverse parts, in terms of function, cultures, peoples, and even ideas. But these parts must be unified by the underlying unity, which is the great commission, to share the Good news, and the great commandment, to love one another and the Lord.

Romans 12:5 In the same way, many people are one body in Christ. Each part is a member of the other parts.
As there are many denominations, there are many peoples, many households, many communities, even many nations. Any one person can be a member of many parts, but we are ALL members of the body of Christ.

From the Old Testament,
Psalms 133:1 A Song of Ascents; of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Unity defines us as a body, and it is the underlying principle that enables us to serve the great commandment, to Love one another.

From the New Testament:
Ephesians 4:3 Try hard to keep the Spirit's unity; use peace to tie it together.
Diversity without unity is chaos. So what unifies us? Here, it is the Holy Spirit, which comes to us whenever we gather together.

Colossians 3:14 Add love to all of these things. Love binds them all together in perfect unity.
Here, as in Psalms, we are united by the great commandment, to love God and to love one another as brothers and sisters.

When Pentecost came upon the apostles, they were not alone. They were filled with the diversity of the body, which called forth the Holy Spirit for the first time.

Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost• came, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:4 They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and they began to speak different inspired languages; the Spirit was giving them the power to do this.
It is only when the diverse peoples were gathered together that the Holy Spirit filled the whole body with this miraculous power to be able to hear one another perfectly, in their OWN language.

Acts 2:5-6 There were some devout Jewish men staying in Jerusalem at this time. These men were from every country in the world. A large group of them came together because they heard the noise. They were confused. The apostles were speaking, and every man heard in his own language.

How perfect this is to illustrate the power of the body in unity. The apostles did not speak from a unified language. They spoke in divine tongues. But the Holy Spirit allowed all the diverse peoples to HEAR the Good News in THEIR language. We did not, at Pentecost, create a monolithic tongue. We preserved our diversity even as all present HEARD the same Word, in THEIR language, through the power of the Holy Spirit. So our unity helps us also to fulfill the great commandment, to spread the good news.
Not only is diversity a necessity then, in terms of the many functions of the body, but also in calling the Holy Spirit forward. This gathering of men from around the world was the catalyst that set off the flowering of the body of Christ around the world.

So, Unity in Diversity is the first core ideal, because it is the catalyst that gives power to the Holy Spirit, which gives US the power to fulfill the great commandment AND the great commission.

Popular Sovereignty
emphasizes the governance we all have within the part of the body we serve.

Romans 12:6-7 God's gracious love gave us different gifts: If it is prophesying, then prophesy by degree of faith. If it is helping other people, then help. If it is teaching, then teach. If it is encouraging people, then encourage. If it is giving money, then be generous. If it is leading others, then work hard. If it is showing mercy, then be cheerful.

In Popular Sovereignty, it is important that we respect the role that each of us serves in our part of the body. It is also important that we be given sovereignty over our part of the body, that we not be FORCED by edict or dictat to follow the commandments of another part of the body. Within the household, the steward has governance over stewardship, the cook has governance over the meal, etc. Each one of us is a sovereignty within our part of the body.

Remember that the body is unified, it is therefore connected through a common vision, to serve the great commission and the great commandment, that it follows the ONE way to salvation, the acceptance of Christ as our savior, who died for our sins, rose three days later, and returned to His rightful place beside the Father. Popular Sovereignty without Unity in Diversity rends the body apart. Popular Sovereignty WITH Unity in Diversity strengthens the parts to serve the whole body.

Nehemiah, Chapter 3, illustrates how Unity in Diversity AND Popular Sovereignty are tied so essentially to one another. After Nehemiah recognizes that the kingdom walls have been left to ill repair and ruin, he calls forth the families of Jerusalem to rebuild and repair the wall. Each family that heard the call took up their place at the wall, and they built as they knew how to build. There was no central planner; rather, each family simply fulfilled its task within its own sovereign place.

Nehemiah 3:1-3 Then Eliashib, the chief priest, got up with his brothers the priests, and took in hand the building of the sheep doorway; they made it holy and put its doors in position; as far as the tower of Hammeah they made it holy, even to the tower of Hananel. And by his side the men of Jericho were building. And after them, Zaccur, the son of Imri. The sons of Hassenaah were the builders of the fish doorway; they put its boards in place and put up its doors, with their locks and rods.

Had the families NOT had unity (unified in rebuilding the kingdom) IN diversity (in this case, multiple disciplines within the families) their Popular Sovereignty would create unconnected, and possibly warring sovereignties, unable to fulfill the task, to rebuild the kingdom.

After we have established our Unity in Diversity and our Popular Sovereignty, we must next build

Democratic Equality
Romans 12:10 Have the same kind of love for one another which brothers have. Give each other more honor than you do yourselves.
How can you elevate yourself over others if you must give others more honor than you give yourself?

Leviticus 19:18 Do not make attempts to get equal with one who has done you wrong, or keep hard feelings against the children of your people, but have love for your neighbour as for yourself: I am the Lord.
Here is a hint at the golden rule AND a reiteration of the great commandment. How can you not love one another if you do NOT do unto others as you would yourself? How can you elevate yourself over yourself?

Democratic Equality does not preclude us from passing judgment on one another, it merely defines how we judge one another, as equals, and how we respect the equality of ALL of the parts of the body. If we are all equals in the Lord, then we also have an equal say in matters which affect the whole (so long as we are acting within the Godly LAW).

Deuteronomy 1:17 In judging, do not let a man's position have any weight with you; give hearing equally to small and great; have no fear of any man, for it is God who is judge: and any cause in which you are not able to give a decision, you are to put before me and I will give it a hearing.

Unity in Diversity BUILDS the cornerstone of the body. Popular Sovereignty allows the parts of the body to flourish freely within the Word. Democratic Equality keeps the parts from elevating themselves over the others. Finally, Rule of Law keeps the bind together, and establishes accountability. The last verse I quoted, Deuteronomy 1:17 is a prefect transition from Democratic Equality to

Rule of Law
Romans 12:17-19 If someone does wrong to you, don't pay him back with another wrong. Be sure you do what everyone already knows is right. If possible, from your part, live in peace with everybody. Don't avenge yourselves, dear friends. Instead, leave room for God to punish. This is written: "The Lord says, `Revenge belongs to me -- I will pay it back´!" (Deut. 32:35)

Where does our right and our wrong come from, human understanding? We've already established there IS no human understanding, only the Word, so our right, our wrong comes from the Word. If you are in violation of the Word, then you will be judged. In the household, the offending member may eventually be removed for violating the Word, with the household coming together to cast Godly judgment upon the offending member.

Mostly, though, the offending member will be judged by having the offense be made visible first to the one who is offended, and, if the offense continues, before the entire household body. In your situation, the judges are the Mother and the Father, who themselves must be governed by the Word and not by their human understanding of right and wrong.

In Kings, Solomon prays for wisdom. Pay attention to what he prays for:
1 Kings 3:7 -9 And now, O Lord my God, you have made your servant king in the place of David my father; and I am only a young boy, with no knowledge of how to go out or come in. And your servant has round him the people of your selection, a people so great that they may not be numbered, and no account of them may be given. Give your servant, then, a wise heart for judging your people, able to see what is good and what evil; for who is able to be the judge of this great people?

God hears Solomon's prayer and responds in verses 11-12
1 Kings 3:11-12 And God said to him, Because your request is for this thing, and not for long life for yourself or for wealth or for the destruction of your haters, but for wisdom to be a judge of causes; I have done as you said: I have given you a wise and far-seeing heart.....

None of us can ever be as wise as Solomon, but all of us, within our Popular Sovereignty, will have some measure of Judgeship we must serve. This is the principle of Rule of Law, that there must be judges, with the final Judges in this household being the Mother and the Father.

These Judges answer to the supreme law, the Word itself, and judge with the Spirit of the Lord, always to serve the Lord, always honoring our Unity in Diversity, our Popular Sovereignty, AND our Democratic Equality. Other households may have a council of judges, or some equivalent, that would be the final arbiter of maintaining the Rule of Law within the household.

Summary
The four core ideals help us spell the word, Upadaria:
Unity in Diversity- U
Popular Sovereignty- P
Democratic Equality- D
Rule of Law- R
U-P-D-R- Upadaria- which also means "the people rule through God".

To understand the underlying principles of your household standards, and to test any modifications a household might make to a standard, you must be familiar with the four core ideals that define a Upadarian Covenant.

Unity in Diversity builds the cornerstone. It literally empowers the whole body by invoking the Holy Spirit. It enables us to fulfill the great commission and requires us to fulfill the great commandment. We share the good news more effectively as a unified body with diverse parts. We preserve our union first and foremost by loving one another and the Lord.

Popular Sovereignty allows the parts of the body to fully serve the whole by giving each part their own sovereign governance AND responsibilities, as Nehemiah demonstrated in how the families restored the kingdom.

Democratic Equality prevents the oppression of the parts, which would not allow the part to come to the full bloom that the Lord has in store for all the diverse parts of the unified body.

Rule of Law is how the diverse parts of the unified body preserve their popular sovereignty and keep all of the diverse parts focused on the two great tasks of the body, to spread the good news of Christ and the salvation He offers us, the great commission, AND to love the Lord and one another as brothers and sisters equal and sovereign, united by the Word.

Let us repeat the opening song so that we might dedicate ourselves to knowing the four core ideals:
Song of Upadaria- The Four Core Ideals

Unity in Diversity
Lord, let us sing a new song of praise in
Your name.
As new stars spill from the cavity of black,
let our lives be new stars
formed from the black earth,
wholly apart from the earth, but living,
in our diverse
lights, in the universal body of Christ.

Popular Sovereignty
Stars reign in their way, with this blue frost
and that yellow spiraling.
They fill the body with that diverse display.
Let no monochrome paint the glory of your
diverse lights with some dull standard that
does not light the lost eye
with your great coloring,
that does not sing love's chromatic glory.

Democratic Equality
As all pins of light are equal in your glory,
let no light consume another,
let no light lift itself above the other great,
diverse displays of your heavenly awe.

Rule of Law
Our song is a song of love in the fire
and diverse engines,
the crimson streaked with gold,
the azure splotched in violet.
with all great stars in service
to the great light of heaven that governs
all in love and service, the light of the Lord that
spills from the star-making machine,
the great Word, which fuels all of the stars
of the universal body of Christ.
