Why am I here?
What am I supposed to do? And how?
These questions are important. And more important today than ever. The trouble is that we try to figure these things out alone. That was never God's intent... that we journey alone.
Individual. I'm an individual. If I, an individual Christian, try to figure out why I’m here, what I’m supposed to do and how- without being connected and in community with other believers, I’ll miss it.
Small group. Most people are part of a small group of other people. We usually have a family. We usually have a circle of friends. If I try to figure out why I'm here and where I'm going without being connected and in genuine Christian community with others in a small group, I will feel lost. Alone. Isolated. And, in the end, I'm not fruitful or fulfilled.
Congregation. People gather in large groups of people. To be part of something larger than ourselves is a need we all have. The word for 'church' was around BEFORE Jesus used it to describe his followers. What did it mean? It meant a group of people who came together to consider the welfare of the community. It was a town gathering. Imagine the power of the town gathering… gathering together to worship God AND gathering together to consider and work on the welfare of the community!
City/Region. We are all part of a larger community. Naturally, we are inwardly focused and self absorbed. Supernaturally we are a light set on a hill. Naturally, we are living in a democracy governed by the laws of state and nation. Supernaturally, we live in a Kingdom governed by the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. And, he has commanded that we extend his Kingdom by death. Dying to our life and living the life Jesus bought for us by dying in our place. And we are commanded to love… in visible, tangible, REAL ways. A glance at our communities shows needs that go unmet, complex and pressing. We can live a natural inward and self-absorbed life. OR we can unite. With God’s supernatural wisdom, God’s supernatural strength and God’s supernational provision – we should step out to help.
Nation. We have been locked in buildings believing somehow that because we are Christians we are forbidden to impact the political system that surrounds us. While we’ve sat on comfortable pews and heard inspiring sermons…
…Millions of innocent children have been slaughtered... ..by their moms. And all within the legal system. Many killings are funded by government money. That is my money and your money.
…Immorality, homosexuality, the sexual revolution, out of wedlock children and living together outside of marriage have become as commonplace as flashy new cars. There is no shame.
…Fruitlessness has become the norm. It is so common that not only are we not reaching our neighbors,, we are not reaching our children, our communities or our cities. Ultimately our nation is being lost.
God has a plan. He has always had a plan. “Go make skilled followers who will in turn make other skilled followers.” It is simple, yet it’s complex.
How do we make skilled, effective followers who will in turn train others? Our prayer needs to be: “God! We need insight!”
God will give us insight as we seek him. We are a body – to the extent that we learn to connect to each other, to God and to his purpose for us, to THAT extent will we be fruitful.
We need to learn and share that insight with others. That is the purpose of KingdomInsight.
