I have been thinking about false humility, arrogance, and true humility lately.
I am on stage alot. I didnt put myself there, God did. I have been singing my whole life: sang specials at school and church, been in 3 bands, went on tour with one band, lead worship and been a singer on numerous worship teams. It is what I know God has gifted me in and called me to do.
Many times after Harp and Bowl people will come up and say that I did a great job or that they love my voice, etc. I used to think that is was arrogant to say, "thank you" since it wasnt about me until someone recently was offended that I didnt take the compliment they gave me and said, "You worked hard to cultivate the gifts God has given you, accept the compliment. We already know that youre up their to Glorify God. Just take the compliment. God is glorified through you being obedient in using the gifting He has placed in you. So, You are welcome." I had to take a step back and think about that. I asked God, "Well, arent I being arrogant, when I take credit for a gift You gave me?"

The answer is "NO". God gave us gifts and talents to Glorify Him yes, but if work hard to cultivate that gift and are using it where God wants us to, then heck yeah we should be taking a compliment.
False Humility is when you act humble but really arent. There are times Ive left my gifts go to my head and let me tell you God has rebuked me openly a few times for that, but I am learning to walk in true humility. God gives us gifts to USE them and use them to minister to OTHERS.
I know that I have a gift but its how I use that gift that matters. I love being on stage. Is that an arrogant thing? No. I just love leading. I love singing. I love looking out and seeing ppl gathered in one place worshiping our Creator with hands lifted, feet dancing and hearts blazing with passion and love for Jesus. It isnt arrogance to enjoy being on stage when God has placed you there and you are doing what HE asked you to and gifted you in, but DOING IT IN HUMILITY. I am a just a tool, you are just a tool. One God is using on stage.
If you are on stage ask yourself, "Am I up here for the right reasons?" "Am I up here for the glory of God, and God only?" "Am i up here to make a name for myself or to be known?" "Am I up here so people will compliment me?" If you can honestly answer these questions with "no" then dont worry about it. God gives us gifts, we need to use the, rock them, and share them. God gives us gifts to give out, to pour out on others. SO DO IT!
A few months ago I attended a small worship service in Elmira, NY. I went there preparing myself to be bored when I saw the band was 4 guys with guitars. that was it. These dudes led a few songs then the main guy spoke and said this prayer that overwhelmed me with how humble he was. He was saying your average "humble words" but you could FEEL he meant them. This guy was walking in such beautiful humility I started to cry and I begged God on my knees to teach me how to walk in that kind of humility, this pure, meaningful humility.
It is good to acknowledge you have a gift and to use it and love it. But being on stage also can go to your head. Ive been there a few times. God is looking for servants who will use their gifts to HONOR AND GLORIFY Him and Him alone! Use your gift, rock it, love it and share it, but remember to keep Christ as your reason.
