Revelation 19 vs 10 says that the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. In the post 9/11 era it might be necessary to update some of our understanding of prophecy. I'm specifically making reference to Rev. 17 vs 10-11:
"And there are seven kings: Five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition."

Egyptian Empire Egyptian Empire
Assyrian Empire Assyrian Empire
Babylonian Empire Babylonian Empire
Persian Empire Persian Empire
Grecian Empire Grecian Empire

Revised Roman Empire Revised Ottoman Empire
The old school interpretation never really made sense, it was based on some preconceived ideas about the Catholic church and the European Union. In light of the succession of empires and Islam's growing militancy to implement Sharia law throughout the whole world, the new school interpretation must be the truth. The Western liberal mindset is incapable of dealing with the new Islamic threat, but we are capable, because 2 Thes. 2 vs 6-8 teaches that the Antichrist is being restrained from being revealed or coming into power by the presence of the Church, but when the Church is taken out of the way(raptured), the Islamic antichrist will then come into power.
