The Power of Thankfulness

How often do we think negative thoughts? The more we think them, the more we usually speak them, at least from my experience. And let's face it, thinking and speaking negatively takes up more energy then it's worth! No really, it literally drains me of my energy when I'm negative. I've found one thing that helps keep me from thinking negatively, and that's speaking positive thoughts!

The easiest positive thing for me to think of is being thankful. It can be for anything, small or big. When I'm in a negative mood, I might say "I'm so thankful for this beautiful sunny day!" or "I'm very thankful I have food to eat, so many people don't." and it instantly changes my perspective.

2 Corintians 10:5 (NIV) tells us to "take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" I think you can take captive almost any negative thought and turn it around to thankfulness. For example, if you are in a bad mood because you didn't get much sleep last night, you can thank God for another day. If your job is frustrating you, you can thank God for giving you a job so you can provide for your family. If you're not happy with your new haircut the hairdresser messed up, you can thank God you are in good health. See? Try it, you might be surprised how it lightens your mood!
