The word theonomy is usually associated with dominionism, Christian reconstructionism, post- millennialism or theocracy, I don't think of it as any of these.  I have seen numerous definitions of theonomy, I think the best definition would be:  The state of being subject to God's authority and rule.  In our culture that is ruled by social darwinists, where we have come to accept our place on the periphery, we think of being ruled by God on an individual level, or at best, a small group level centered at a local church on Sunday morning.  This has been the arrangement for quite some time now, and as our civilization crumbles around us, it is apparent that this is not working.  We can assume that this is just the way things are and continue to endure evil until the Lord raptures us out of Dodge, I just don't think that this is the script that God has written for us.  The Gospel is an all emcompassing program, that is why we are to go into the whole world preaching it.  No matter how hard some twist their pet scriptures, we cannot avoid our civic responsibilities.  At times, I don't think we can do any thing to change things, but then I think of the time Elijah thought that he was the only one serving God, but God said to him that there were 7000 that had not bowed before Baal.  There are people out there that I don't know about that God has prepared to do a great work.  The Lord does not change as it says in Mal 3 vs 6, He will once again make a distinction between those that serve Him and those that don't(Mal 3 vs 18).  I envision a great movement of God, where millions of Christians are united under God's authority and rule leading up to the rapture of the Church.
