Using video to connect to the culture

Video is a very powerful media to reach today's culture. We watch tv, go to the movies, view online videos, and even upload our own videos via Youtube. Video can and should be used to share the Gospel with our culture. To demonstrate just how powerful and far-reaching video is, I'll pick apart a very popular Christian ministry viral video on Youtube with over nineteen million views. It's called "Lifehouse's Everything Skit" and can be found here

The video starts with a Christian youth dancing with Jesus- conveying that she is walking with Christ. As the video progresses, obstacles separate her from Christ in the form of peer pressure. These obstacles include alcohol, the pressure to be thin (bulimia), and eventually she contemplates suicide. Just when she reaches the end of her rope, she falls to her knees calling out to God, and He answers by pulling her close to Him, and they dance again, as His word says when we draw near to Him, He'll draw near to us (James 4:8).

So, why is this video so effective?  On the surface, it's just a simple five minute video showcasing how falling victim to peer pressure can distance us from God. But, that is exactly why it's so effective. By showing issues that youth today are dealing with, we can reach them. In short, most people relate to it. No Christian jargon is needed that the average unsaved person or unseasoned Christian would not understand. Also, the fact that the video is set to a popular Lifehouse song helps because it's familiar to youth and they'll associate the message behind the video with the song. It's a plain and simple way to teach the message of Christ to the culture of today. And since it's on video, it reaches people in a way they take in information- by watching videos, that is.
