THE KINGDOM OF GOD AND THE HOUSEHOLDS OF FAITH
The Kingdom of God is an “ing” word! It is going from Household to Household, preaching the good news, baptizing, healing, delivering, teaching, working together, fellowshipping, breaking bread, and the like!
First, we believe and repent and are baptized: that’s how we enter into the Kingdom. Then we do the works of the Kingdom. Then we manifest the fruits of the Kingdom. Then God adds “all these things” and we see the promises of Deuteronomy 28 come to pass: He makes us the head and not the tail and blesses us in all things.
The “forgotten” level is the Household: which is not a large gathering, like your church service, and not just you as an individual. It is “oikos” in “koinia”, the Household of people who are knit together in fellowship to serve one another, care for one another, reprove, rebuke, and exhort one another, and do the works of the Kingdom, encouraging one another, being accountable to one another, to show forth the fruits of the Kingdom.
(Note: this is not meant to imply that we should not have large gatherings, the point is not that we should do less of one thing, gather as a corporate body for public worship, but, rather, that we should restore the concept and practices of the Household, which is more than just “small groups” and looks like a home church meets a networking group meets an extended family.)
In short, the Kingdom is what we do when we come together as a family, a Household of Faith, to continue in the Apostles’ Doctrine, to break bread in fellowship and observe the Lord’s Supper, to preach the gospel, and to manifest the fruits of the Kingdom, which are the fruits of the Spirit.
We are not merely “in the Kingdom” we are, in a sense, “Kingdoming”, we are doing the works of the Kingdom!
